Suicide Deaths, California, by Year 1979-1996,
All Ages, All Races, Both Genders

Source: U.S. Vital Records data obtained through CDC Wonder, ICD 950.0 to 958.9

Use this table to examine year-to-year trends within counties.
Do not use this table to compare the rates of one county to another. If that comparison is desired, use California Age Adjusted Suicide Rates

Exercise caution when comparing suicide rates:

  • Deaths are classified by medical examiners
  • Although the criteria should be uniform this is not always the case
Remember that suicide rates may underestimate the true rate of intentional self-harm
  • The stigma attached to suicide may influence classification
  • Certain fatal events may arise from thoughts and actions similar to suicide
    • Single-vehicle motor vehicle crashes
    • Gang-related fights with weapons
Rates calculated from table cells with fewer than 20 events are unstable and unreliable.
Data for some counties for some years is missing.

When viewing mortality and disability statistics it is important to remember
that the statistical events occurred to individuals
with lives, families, and friends.
