California's suicide rate has declined by about one-third.

Suicide Among Adolescents, United States and California, 1979-1996

The suicide rate among adolescents in California has remained stable
while the rate for the nation has increased.

Suicide Among Elders, United States and California, 1979-1996

The suicide rate among elders in California generally has paralleled that of the nation.
However, California's rate remains much higher than the national rate.

All rates were calculated from U.S. vital records data downloaded from the CDC Wonder database.

When viewing mortality and disability statistics it is important to remember
that the statistical events occurred to individuals
with lives, families, and friends.
